چکیده

Objectives: L-carnitine has been used as therapy in hemodialysis patients for many years. When HCV was present, higher rates of patient mortality displayed. However, no study is concerned with the synergistic effect of L-carnitine and HCV. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of L-carnitine on the markers of DNA damage and oxidative stress in maintenance hemodialysis patients with HCV infection. Material and methods: The blood samples were collected from 63 patients from March 2011 to November 2013 (43 HCV-positive patients in hemodialysis and 20 HCV-negative patients on dialysis). DNA damage was evaluated by cytokinesis-block micronucleus cytome (CBMN-Cyt) assay. Oxidative stress indicators (superoxide anion, hydrogen peroxide, hydroxyl radical, malondialdehyde, superoxide dismutase, glutathione) were determined with the kits. Results: The results showed that L-carnitine had no effect on the levels of free radical indicator, free radical damage indicator and endogenous antioxidant enzymes. The frequencies of micronuclei (MN) and nuclear buds (NBUD) were remarkably reduced after the treatment of L-carnitine. Conclusion: Taken together, our findings indicate that L-carnitine supplementation reduced oxidative DNA damage in peripheral blood lymphocytes of maintenance hemodialysis patients with HCV infection. The patients might benefit from L-carnitine supplementation by inhibiting DNA damage.

Occult Hepatitis B Virus Infection in Chronic Hemodialysis Patients in Panje-Azar Hospital, Gorgan

Abstract Background and objectives: Hepatitis B virus infection is a major health problem in worldwide. The prevalence of Occult and chronic HBV in hemodialysis patients is higher than standard in developing countries. People with occult HBV are negative for HBV surface antigen (HBsAg) but positive for HBV-DNA. We aimed to evaluate occult hepatitis B infection in patients under hemodialysis in ...

Prevalence of hepatitis C, hepatitis B, and HIV infection among hemodialysis patients in Jenin District (Palestine)

Background and Aims: End-stage renal disease patients treated by hemodialysis (HD) are more susceptible for infection by viral hepatitis and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infections. Infection by these viruses is promoted by the characteristic immunological dysfunction that develops in renal failure and interferes with the patient's ability to eliminate these viruses. Prevalence of these v...

Significance of Hepatitis B Core Antibody as the Only Marker of Hepatitis B Virus Infection in High Risk Patients

Background and Objective: Presence of hepatitis B core antibody (anti-HBc) in the absence of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) and hepatitis B surface antibody (anti-HBs) is defined, as isolated anti-HBc. little is known about the clinical significance of the isolated anti-HBc in hepatitis B virus (HBV) infections. The aim of this study was to assess the significance of anti-HBc as the onl...
